About José Hendo
José Hendo is a Ugandan-born British eco-sustainable designer who takes a fresh approach to fashion design, challenging the throwaway culture. José Hendo has won multiple awards. She promotes the use of organic, eco- textiles and recycled materials to create unique often avant-garde garments and accessories for both women and men. She supports ethical values and the environment.
Designing clothes now requires an awareness of the impact of the fashion industry on the environment. In her desire to get away from fast fashion, ‘sustainable by design’ is her mantra, from material choices to clever cutting and simplified production processes. “The clothes we wear are a direct expression of our personalities, beliefs and lifestyles. Therefore the history of a garment is just as important as its future.”
She chooses to work extensively with barkcloth. Barkcloth making is a centuries-old technique. It is considered the oldest cloth made by man and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Material in 2005. As the tree regenerates another bark to be harvested every year for up to sixty years, this organic cloth that predates the weaving era is the best ambassador for sustainability.
In 2014 José Hendo launched an initiative called BARK TO THE ROOTS CIC (B2TR). She is now connected with the barkcloth making communities in Uganda who have preserved this heritage of making cloth.
Collections produced by the label are inspired by a mixture of José’s African heritage and British influence. Barkcloth features in all collections, used innovatively alongside other organic fabrics such as organic cotton, silk, hemp, bamboo, end-of-line fabrics such as linen, wool or denim and upcycling.
Garments are produced at the design studio, ‘José Original Ltd’, situated in London
Driving Industry Trends
“Through my research, I learnt what happens through the life-cycle of a garment: From farming to production to the consumer then to landfill. Designing clothes now requires an awareness of the environmental impact of the fashion industry. That’s why I chose to combine good design with sustainability.”
In the desire to get away from fast fashion, the label invested in research into eco-sustainable fashion. The data collected clearly indicated that the future trend in the fashion industry was towards sustainability. “This has become the cornerstone of ‘José Hendo’ – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – the R3. From materials to clever cutting and simplified production processes, we pride ourselves in quality, while aiming to stay relevant.

Ethically Sourced
‘José Hendo’ wants to make a positive contribution to society. Ways of doing this are internships and work experience. Another important community initiative is B2TR (Bark To The Roots CIC) which is my attempt to share what I’ve learnt about the use of barkcloth in the modern fashion world. B2TR is an initiative anchored in the ethos of the sustainable development goals, reminding us to preserve both our heritage and environment. It is critical to our future to get back to our roots for inspiration to build a resilient and sustainable fashion industry. B2TR led to the exciting link with barkcloth making communities in Uganda and enables the sourcing of organic barkcloth direct from the processors which is important as the communities philosophy matches the sustainable nature of the fashion label.
Barkcloth is used in all the label’s collections. “My dream is to continue to make barkcloth work alongside mainstream fabrics.” UNESCO recognises Barkcloth making as a centuries old technique, one that is a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. It is considered the oldest manmade fabric and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Material in 2005.
Currently there are ten collections produced under the label. The ‘Resonance’ collection is entirely made from barkcloth.
